Art Bar SEXYLAND #28
On Feb. 25, we will be back with Art Bar SEXYLAND #28, featuring Rineke Dijkstra.
This time we land in a brown pub with strong activist values: Café Saarein. 🍸
Since the early 1990s, Rineke Dijkstra has built up an impressive body of photographic and video art in which she works with the genre of portraiture in a contemporary way. 📸 By isolating people from their everyday surroundings and focusing on subtle details, the pose and gaze of the person portrayed, she urges the viewer to look closely at people who are often in transition in one way or another. Invariably, the emphasis in Dijkstra's portraits is on the poses and the gaze, and in this way she shows in an unapologetic way how multifaceted each individual can be.
Rineke Dijkstra is internationally recognized; her work is part of leading museum collections worldwide. ✨
Amsterdam is lucky to have Café Saarein, a brown pub with strong activist values that has functioned as a visible meeting place and safe haven for women, feminists and queer individuals since 1978. The pub brings together people of diverse sexualities, genders and mindsets; Solidarity with a hearty beer. 🍻
At night, the café bustles with regulars, new flames and iconic bartenders behind the bar. And if that's not enough, intense competition around the pool table has raged in the basement for decades.
You could say that this gem in the Jordaan is a piece of cultural heritage. Partly for this reason, a year and a half ago the café was incorporated into the Saarein Foundation, with the aim of protecting and propagating the rich history and social significance of Saarein. 🏳️🌈
Art Bar SEXYLAND is the monthly changing Wednesday café for when you are stuck in your ideas: talk about art or show your work to a renowned artist or curator - who is just behind the bar this evening. Bad bartenders, great ideas. 💡
