Poly Stories | Mono Responses to Poly Identity

Treehouse NDSM, T.T. Neveritaweg 55-57, Amsterdam

THEME OF THIS EVENING: MONO RESPONSES TO POLY IDENTITY
The dream: you’re at a wedding with your +2, having polite and pleasant conversation at the table, looking through the flower piece. The reality: you’re at a church service and introduce your new partner to another member - explaining that no, you’ve not broken up with your anchor partner. Worst-case scenario: your go-to gossip friend suddenly goes silent on the phone after you tell them about your Friday night kiss, before judging the saliva sharing agreement in your relationship.

As we all know, being polyamourous or ethically non-monogamous comes with its (sometimes heartbreaking) challenges. While we may have our self-designed frameworks, love and sexplorations, a broader world with sceptical co-workers, slut-shaming loved ones and religious or community guidelines surrounds us. A world wherein the default mode is still monogamy.

So, what do we do? Do we see an opportunity to de-stigmatise ENM when met with misunderstanding, challenge the norm by openly and unapologetically showing our poly identity, or keep our choices undisclosed, hidden away from prejudice? When people eventually do find out, how do we handle their response?

THIS IS FOR YOU WHEN
This evening is for anyone: whether you’re just starting out or already experienced in non-monogamy/open relationships/polyamory.
